The Institute on Religion and Public Policy strongly condemns the new constitution ratified by the Maldives' legislature yesterday. The constitution fails to provide basic guarantees of rights and freedoms in the country for non-Muslims and also violates internationally accepted human rights standards and norms.
Article 9, Section D states that "a non-Muslim may not become a citizen of the Maldives." By denying citizenship to some people on the basis of their religion, the country is violating religious minorities' freedom of worship.
"This denial of citizenship to non-Muslims is an extraordinarily harsh measure which places the Maldives among the worst countries in the world in regards to the legal foundation for freedom of religion and belief," said Institute President Joseph K. Grieboski.
In addition to denying non-Muslims citizenship, the new constitution establishes several other precepts which threaten the freedom of religion. The new constitution favors Sunni Islam over other forms of Islam, establishes certain aspects of Sharia law in the Maldives and limits the freedom of expression and thought to "manners" which are "not contrary to a tenet of Islam."
The Institute's Expert Committee on Legislation and Implementation is currently crafting a comprehensive analysis of the new constitution for expected release in September.

i agree with the above 3 comments. i guess you are a hypocrite and a coward. u people are just always quick in bringing the same old lame issue about basic human rights when talking about religious freedom.
Notice the fear and cowardice that is typical of Muslims here. They don't care about others. They have no respect for non-Muslims. They are intolerant and oppressive. They can only complain about how they are "misunderstood" and then blame others when non-Muslims are offended by the hate, violence and discrimination that are typical of Muslims.
The only question is how the good Muslims continue to be Muslims. Doesn't the hate and violence in the Quran bother them? Don't they care about the vile treatment of others in all Islamic socities (I am talking about non-muslims, women, gays, even minority sects of Islam). Why don't the many evil deeds described in the hadith (Islamic traditions) offend their sense of morality? Or maybe they think that murder, plunder, torture, enslavement of men women and children, rape and wife beating are just fine....
What is happening in the Maldives is just Islam being Islam - that is, treating others like dirt. Look at the apostasy laws! Then Muslims complain because non-Muslims say bad things about Islam and their dear prophet... And why not?
I see no reason to respect a people that doesn't respect others.

Muslims teaches and talk about whats good in Islam..We dont need or have to talk bad about other religons..Why dont you do that too..say if you are a christian open a blog about christianity about and present any beauty in it..Thats what we do..good luck

I think christians also believe in Allah the problem is they are following an old book .. if they understand the original text in that book then they will follow the new book "Quran".
In the new book Allah subhaanahoo vathaaala says " the kuffar,the people of the book (christian & Jews)& the mushrikeen will be in "Jahannam" hell for ever" this is a command from your lord as well, if your true then show us a verse in the original text of thauraath,injeel or zaboor which says that you dont follow islam or islams(muslims) will be in hell fire rather Allah has commanded us all to join islam & fight with Kuffar untill they chose the right path.
Allah has not send the humans & jins to live in this world for ever rather they have to worship Allah in the way the prophet Mohamed (sallaallah alaihi vassalam)has shown us do.
So wake up guys otherwise you will be in hell fire, that you will know when you die & when your soul is removed from your body so fear Allah & repent, you have time till you die.

muslim sites does not critisize any religion, they are busy in teaching thier religion, whereas ur site and many other christian sites are always critisizing islam- y not be a grown up and try at least to clarify ur own religion. can it be that ur religion is so hard to understand that nobody has ever tried to figure it out?

that is a site by formaer christian missionery who converted to islam .G.R.. Miller is a mathematician and a theologian. He was active inChristian missionary work at a particular point of his life but he soonbegan to discover many inconsistencies in the Bible. In 1978, hehappened to read the Qur'an expecting that it, too, would contain amixture of truth and falsehood.
He discovered to his amazement that the message of the Qur'an was precisely the same as the essence of truth that he had distilled from the Bible. He became a Muslim and since then has been active in giving public presentations on Islam including radio and television appearances. He is also the author of several articles and publications about Islam.
Israel does the same thing. So, where is the condemnation? The pure fact is that it is the pure hatred of Islam as a way of life.
Allah says that The Jews and The Christians will never be happy until we follow their way. Why should we follow them in to ruin when Allah has promised us success?
My only hope is that the human rights given to the non-muslim who pays the jizyah are upheld as they were upheld during the times of the messenger of Allah and his companions.
May Allah give honor and dignity to Islam and the Muslims.
